A short drive uphill from Naggar Castle, past deodar trees and old wooden houses, sits one of Himachal's most peaceful spots: the Roerich Estate. Here, the Russian painter, explorer and philosopher Nicholas Roerich made his home and painted the Himalayas he loved.
Who was Nicholas Roerich?
Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) left Russia after the 1917 revolution, travelled widely through Asia, and eventually settled in the Kullu valley in the late 1920s. He painted thousands of canvases of Himalayan peaks, monasteries and skies, and lived in Naggar until his death in 1947. His son, the painter Svetoslav Roerich, later set up the gallery in the family house, and the estate is now maintained as a heritage museum.
What you will see
The ground floor displays paintings of Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, many of them capturing snow peaks in the cool, deep colours of early evening. Upstairs, the private rooms have been preserved with photographs, personal effects, quotations and visitor notes. The grounds and gardens are quiet and good for a slow wander, with deodars framing views over the valley.
Timings and entry fee
- Open roughly 9 AM to 5 PM; closed on Mondays.
- Entry fee is around ₹50 per person, and it is worth carrying some cash as well as UPI.
- Allow about an hour, longer if you enjoy reading the captions.
Timings and fees can change, so check locally before you go.
Getting there
The gallery is about 1.5 km from Naggar Castle, along a road that climbs gently through the village. You can walk it in 20–30 minutes, or take a local taxi. It is roughly 21 km from Manali and reachable by cab from Kullu and Bhuntar as well.
Best season
The gallery is open year-round, but autumn and spring offer the clearest views and the most comfortable weather. In winter the road can be icy, so take care when walking, though the setting is beautiful under snow.
Etiquette and tips
- Speak softly, as many visitors come here for the calm.
- Check the photography rules at the ticket counter; some galleries restrict cameras indoors.
- Pair the visit with Naggar Castle and the old temples for an easy half-day loop.
If you're looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village — book your stay to wake up to valley views.
Whether you are an art lover or simply someone who likes a quiet corner with a view, the Roerich Estate is worth a slow hour. Plan your visit for a clear afternoon and let the mountains do the talking.
