What to Pack for Himachal: A Season-by-Season Checklist

Mountain weather is changeable, and a valley village like Naggar can feel warm at noon and chilly by dusk. Packing well means layers, good footwear and a few small essentials, not a heavy suitcase. Here is a season-by-season checklist for the Kullu Valley.

The rule of layers

Whatever the month, plan for large day-to-night temperature swings. Pack a base layer, a warm mid layer such as a fleece, and a light windproof or waterproof outer layer. You can add or remove pieces as the day changes.

Winter (November to February)

Expect cold, and sub-zero temperatures at higher altitudes, with snow possible. Bring thermal innerwear, a down or heavily insulated jacket, fleece layers, woollen cap, gloves and socks, and waterproof boots with good grip. Boots are the single most important winter item, since roads and paths get icy.

Summer (March to June)

Days are mild and sunny, but evenings turn cool. Pack breathable t-shirts, trek pants, a full-sleeve shirt for sun, a light jacket for evenings, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are enough for most village and temple trails.

Monsoon (July to September)

Rain is frequent, and landslides can delay roads. Bring a proper rain jacket, quick-dry clothing, extra socks, waterproof footwear, a dry bag or pouch for electronics and a small umbrella. Avoid cotton jeans, which stay wet for hours.

Autumn (October to November)

Clear skies, apple harvest and crisp air. Pack as for late spring plus a warmer jacket, because nights drop fast.

Year-round essentials

  • Documents: Photo ID and copies of bookings. Some areas and treks require ID registration.
  • Cash: ATMs exist in towns but can run dry or fail, so carry emergency cash.
  • Medicines: Personal prescriptions, basic first aid, motion-sickness tablets for winding roads, and any altitude-related advice from your doctor if you head high.
  • Power: A power bank and charging cables, since outages can happen.
  • Daypack, water bottle and torch: Useful for walks and evening lanes.
  • Footwear: Shoes with grip over fashion. Slippers for indoors.
  • Snacks: Handy on long drives.

What to leave at home

Heels, bulky formal wear and too many duplicate outfits. Laundry is easy to arrange, and packing light makes taxis, buses and village walks easier.
