About 14 km north of Manali, Solang Valley is the Kullu Valley's adventure playground. At roughly 2,560 metres, it is a wide, grassy bowl ringed by pine forest and snow peaks, and in winter it turns into a snow field. It suits travellers who want a few hours of activity and big views. If you want quiet, treat it as a quick outing and return to Naggar by evening.
How to get there from Naggar
Naggar is around 21 km from Manali, and Solang is another 14 km beyond. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours each way by taxi, depending on traffic. The road continues towards the Atal Tunnel's southern portal, so you can combine both in one trip. In peak season and on weekends, start early; traffic near Manali builds fast.
What to do
Solang works more like an activity park than a wilderness hike. Popular options include the ropeway, which lifts you to around 3,200 metres for broad Himalayan views, as well as paragliding, ATV rides, zorbing and pony rides. Approximate costs commonly quoted are Rs 500 to 700 for the ropeway round trip, Rs 1,500 to 3,200 for a tandem paraglide, and Rs 500 to 1,000 for an ATV ride. Prices change, so confirm before you pay and use only registered operators.
If you are looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village. Book your stay to wake up to valley views.
Best time to visit
- March to June: Green meadows, clear skies and the best paragliding window, with daytime temperatures of around 12 to 22 degrees Celsius.
- December to February: Snow for sledding and informal skiing, but sub-zero temperatures and icy roads.
- July to September: Monsoon mist and rain reduce views and activities.
Practical tips
- Allow 3 to 4 hours at the valley itself.
- Carry a warm layer and sun protection, even in summer. Weather turns quickly at altitude.
- Weekends can feel like an outdoor fair; weekday mornings are calmer.
- In snow season, check road conditions and carry or hire proper boots.
- Paragliding depends on wind and weather, so keep your plan flexible.
Make a day of it
On the way back, stop at Vashisht for the hot springs or at Hadimba Temple, then return to Naggar for a quiet evening. If you want a truly quieter high-altitude day, Naggar's own forest trails are only a short drive from the village.
