High on the hillside at the far end of Naggar village sits one of Himachal's most unusual museums. The Roerich Art Gallery is where the Russian painter, philosopher and explorer Nicholas Roerich made his home, and it is a rewarding stop for anyone who likes art, quiet gardens and long mountain views.
The Roerich story in brief
Nicholas Roerich moved his base from Darjeeling to Naggar and founded the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute in 1928. He spent years painting the Himalayas here and died in December 1947. He was cremated on the spot where the gallery now stands, and his rock memorial (samadhi) can still be visited in the grounds. His son Svetoslav, also a painter, married the film actress Devika Rani in 1945 and later settled in Bangalore.
What you can see
- Ground-floor gallery: paintings linked to India and the Himalayas, including portraits by Svetoslav Roerich of Devika Rani and of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
- Roerich House: the upper floor shows the family's rooms kept as they were last used. You look in from the doorway, and groups are kept small, around ten people at a time.
- Memorial rooms: personal photographs, belongings and tools of Svetoslav and Devika Rani, along with the Banner of Peace designed by Nicholas Roerich.
- Folk art and modern art museums: small collections inside the same complex, plus old memorial stones of Naggar's former rulers.
The complex is run by the International Roerich Memorial Trust and also has a tea and coffee bar and a small souvenir shop.
Fees and timings
Entry has been around Rs 30 for adults and Rs 20 for children under 12, and a cloakroom is available for large bags. Fees and opening hours change from time to time, and the gallery may close on certain days, so check locally on the day before you set out.
How to get there
Naggar lies on the left bank of the Beas, about 22 km from Kullu on the way to Manali. From the Kullu–Manali highway, turn towards the river at Patlikuhl, cross the bridge and drive roughly 5 km uphill to Naggar. The gallery is at the far end of the village, towards the hillside. Taxis and local buses run from Patlikuhl, Kullu and Manali.
If you're looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village. Book your stay to wake up to valley views before you wander up to the gallery.
Tips for a good visit
- Allow one to two hours so you can enjoy the paintings and the grounds without rushing.
- Go in the morning, when the light on the valley is best and tour groups are fewer.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The approach is a gentle uphill walk.
- Combine it with Naggar Castle and the village's old stone temples for a relaxed half-day.
- Photography rules differ by room, so ask staff before using your camera inside.
Best time to visit
The gallery can be seen year-round, but spring and autumn are the most pleasant, with clear skies behind the Pir Panjal range. In winter it is cold but peaceful, and in monsoon the roads can be slippery, so allow extra travel time.
Whether you come for the art, the history or simply the hush of the garden, the Roerich Gallery shows a quieter side of the Kullu Valley. Plan your trip, pack a warm layer and let Naggar slow you down. If you'd like a comfortable base nearby, get in touch with Ghar in the Hills and we'll be happy to help you plan your days.
