Chail is a small, peaceful hill town in the Solan district, wrapped in pine and deodar forest. It is quieter than Shimla and works well as a stop on the road between the plains and the Kullu valley. If you are driving up to Naggar from Chandigarh or Delhi, a night or two in Chail makes the long journey far gentler.
The Palace Estate
Chail grew around a summer retreat built for the Maharaja of Patiala. The 75-acre palace estate passed to the state government in 1972 and now functions as a heritage hotel, with lawns, a terrace cafe and old-world interiors. Even if you are not staying, you can usually enjoy the grounds, though it is best to check access rules at the gate. In summer, watch your snacks, since monkeys can be bold.
The Cricket Ground
Chail's famous cricket ground, laid out by the Patiala royals at about 2,200 m (7,218 ft), is often described as one of the highest in the world. It lies inside an army cantonment area, so civilians generally cannot enter, and you should treat any photo stops with respect for signage and security.
Sidh Baba Temple and the Gurudwara
Next to the cricket ground stands the Sidh Baba ka Mandir, a simple shrine dedicated to a local ascetic and a quiet place to stop. A little above the bazaar, on Pandhawa hill, is a gurudwara built in 1907, with calm views over the surrounding ridges.
Kali Ka Tibba Viewpoint
For an easy hike, walk to Kali Ka Tibba, a hilltop viewpoint about 6 km from the bazaar via Gaura Road. On clear days you can look towards the Choor Chandni peak and the Shivalik range. Start early, carry water and wear shoes with grip; the forest track can be damp.
Best Season
Chail can be visited all year. Spring and autumn offer the clearest views and gentle walks, summer is busy but cool compared with the plains, and winter brings crisp air and occasional snow. Monsoon fog can hide the views, so keep your plans flexible.
How to Reach Chail
- By air: Chandigarh is the nearest airport, around 110 km (about three hours) away.
- By rail: Kalka is the closest railhead, about 84 km away.
- By road: Reach Solan, take the bypass and turn at Kandaghat; Chail is roughly 27 km from there.
Practical Tips
- Arrive early if you hope to spot wildlife in the forest.
- There is no big mall; Chail has only a small cluster of shops, so carry cash and essentials.
- Book a stay in advance for summer weekends and holidays.
