Gobind Sagar Lake, Bilaspur: Water Sports on the Sutlej Reservoir

Most visitors drive past Bilaspur on the road between Chandigarh and the Kullu Valley, but the long blue sheet of Gobind Sagar is worth a pause. Created by the Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej, it is among the largest reservoirs in the Himalayan foothills and a pleasant break on the way to or from Naggar.

About the lake

The reservoir stretches about 56 km in length and nearly 3 km at its widest, across Bilaspur and Una districts. It is named after Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. Bhakra Dam, built between 1955 and 1962, is one of the world's highest gravity dams at about 225 m. Since 1976, the Beas–Sutlej link has diverted Beas water into the reservoir to help keep levels steady.

Water sports and activities

Because water levels rise and fall through the year, most activities run from roughly August to January. Options include kayaking, rowing, canoeing, water-skiing and gentle rafting in inflatable boats. A water sports complex operates at Luhnu Ground in Bilaspur, offering beginner to advanced courses. In October and November, when levels are high, regattas are held on the lake.

Birds and fishing

The lake was declared a waterfowl refuge in 1962, and around 51 fish species and subspecies live in it, including mahseer and mirror carp. Fishing is common, and winter brings migratory birds, so bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching.

How to get there from Naggar

Bilaspur lies on the highway between Mandi and Chandigarh. From Naggar, the drive is long, usually a full day with stops, so many travellers break the journey at Bilaspur or Mandi. Buses and taxis are available throughout, and the road is generally good.

Best time to visit

  • October to January: high water, clear skies, active water sports and birds.
  • February to April: pleasant weather, but lower water.
  • Summer: hot at lower elevations, so go early.

Tips

  • Check the water sports schedule locally before you go.
  • Wear a life jacket whenever on the water.
  • Carry sun protection and water in warmer months.

If you are looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village, a calm place to unwind after the long road home.
