The Lavi Fair in Rampur: Himachal's Historic Trade Fair

The Lavi Fair at Rampur Bushahr, in Shimla district, is one of Himachal Pradesh's most important trade and cultural fairs. Held every November, it has roots in old Himalayan trade routes and still draws traders, artisans and visitors from across the region. If you enjoy local culture and markets, it is a memorable autumn detour.

A Fair with Tibetan Roots

The fair traces back to a trade agreement between the Bushahr ruler Raja Kehri Singh and the Tibetan government under the Fifth Dalai Lama, in the late 1600s. The pact allowed tax-free trade between merchants of both regions. Historically, traders exchanged Tibetan horses, dry fruits, wool and pashmina for salt, jaggery and provisions from Rampur. The name Lavi is linked to wool or woollen cloth.

When It Is Held

The fair is held around 11 to 14 November each year, with cultural evening programmes during those days and market activity often continuing through the month. Dates and programmes are announced locally, so check with the district administration before you plan.

What You Will Find

  • Woollens and shawls: Pashmina, local wool and Himachali handloom goods are the classic buys.
  • Dry fruits: Look for locally traded nuts and fruits from the higher valleys.
  • Handicrafts: Stalls sell utensils, craft goods and traditional clothing.
  • Cultural nights: Folk songs and dances from different parts of Himachal are staged in the evenings.

Getting There

Rampur lies along the Sutlej on the Shimla to Kinnaur road (NH5). It is a long day's drive from the Kullu Valley, so most travellers plan an overnight stop. Book any stay early, as rooms fill up during the fair.

Where to Stay and How Long to Spend

Most visitors treat the fair as a one or two day visit, exploring the market by day and attending an evening programme. You can also use Rampur as a stop on a longer road trip along the Sutlej towards Sarahan and Kinnaur. Plan your timing around the fair dates and keep some flexibility in your schedule, since road conditions and local events can change plans at short notice.

Practical Tips

  • Carry cash for stalls and bargain politely.
  • Pack warm layers, as November evenings are cold.
  • Arrive early in the day to avoid crowds and traffic.
  • Buy wool and dry fruit from trusted stalls and ask about the material.
