Raison: A Riverside Meadow and Camping Day Out from Naggar

Raison: A Riverside Meadow and Camping Day Out from Naggar

Some of the prettiest stretches of the Kullu valley aren't the famous viewpoints — they're the wide, flat river meadows where the Beas slows down and spreads out. Raison is exactly that kind of place. A small cluster of villages on the banks of the Beas, roughly 10 km down-valley from Naggar and just past Katrain, Raison sits at about 1,433 m where the valley opens into one of its broadest, greenest floors.

Why Raison is worth a stop

Raison is best known for two things: its riverside camping grounds and white-water rafting on the Beas. The grassy flats right beside the water are run as a campsite by Himachal's tourism department, with a row of simple wooden huts and space for tents. Even if you're not staying the night, it's a lovely spot to spend a slow afternoon — the river is wide and loud here, the light is soft, and by March the surrounding orchards and slopes turn colourful with blossom.

Rafting on the Beas

Raison is one of the main put-in and take-out points for rafting in the Kullu valley. The rafting stretch on the Beas generally runs between Pirdi, near Kullu, and Jhiri, with grade II–III rapids that are exciting but manageable for first-timers. The season usually runs from around April to late June and again after the monsoon in September and October; operators don't run when the river is in heavy spate. Always go with a licensed operator, wear the life jacket and helmet, and confirm the day's water level before booking.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: Raison is about 10 km from Naggar. Drop down to Patlikuhl, cross to the right bank of the Beas and continue toward Katrain and Kullu — Raison is just beyond Katrain. Any Kullu-bound bus from Patlikuhl will drop you on the highway.
  • Best time: April to June for rafting and green meadows; September to November for clear autumn skies. Winters are cold but quiet and beautiful.
  • Cost: There's no entry fee for the meadow. Rafting is charged per person and varies by stretch length; camping huts need advance booking through the Kullu tourist office.
  • Carry: A change of clothes if you plan to raft, sunscreen, and a picnic — this is a place to linger.

Raison pairs beautifully with a wider valley day: combine it with the trout farms around Katrain or a stop at Patlikuhl market on the way back.

If you'd like a calm base to come home to after a day by the river, Ghar in the Hills is a cosy homestay right in Naggar village — close enough to Raison for a spontaneous afternoon by the Beas, and quiet enough that you'll sleep to the sound of the hills. Book your stay and let the valley set the pace.
