Suraj Tal: The Sun Lake Below Baralacha La

Suraj Tal: The Sun Lake Below Baralacha La

On the old Manali–Leh road, just below one of its great passes, lies a lake so high and so blue it hardly looks real. Suraj Tal — the "Lake of the Sun" — sits at around 4,880 m, making it one of the highest lakes in India and a sacred spot for travellers crossing the Baralacha La. For anyone drawn to big, empty, high-altitude landscapes, it is one of the most rewarding sights within reach of the Kullu valley.

Why Suraj Tal is special

Suraj Tal is often ranked as the second- or third-highest lake in the country, depending on how it is measured. It is revered as the source of the Bhaga river, which later joins the Chandra to form the Chenab. The lake lies just south of the Baralacha La (about 4,890 m), at the meeting point of routes towards Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti, and Manali — a genuine crossroads of the high Himalaya. On a clear day its still water turns an unreal turquoise against bare, snow-streaked ridges.

What to expect

  • Raw high-altitude scenery: no trees, no towns — just rock, snow and sky at nearly 4,900 m.
  • Baralacha La: the pass itself, with its prayer flags and sweeping views, is right above the lake.
  • A quiet pause: most vehicles stop only briefly, so a few minutes by the water can feel wonderfully remote.

How to reach Suraj Tal from Naggar

Suraj Tal lies on the road north from Manali towards Leh. From Naggar, drive to Manali and through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, then follow the valley via Keylong, Jispa and Darcha towards the Baralacha La; the lake sits just below the pass, roughly 140–150 km beyond Manali. It is a long day each way, so many travellers see Suraj Tal as part of a Leh road trip or an overnight from Jispa or Keylong rather than a single-day dash.

Practical tips

  • Best season: mid-June to September, once the pass clears of snow; it is shut through winter.
  • Altitude care: at nearly 4,900 m, do not linger too long if you feel unwell — descend and rest.
  • Come prepared: there are no shops or fuel near the lake, and the weather turns fast — carry layers, water and a full tank.

A drive to Suraj Tal is a proper Himalayan expedition, and it is far easier when you start rested and acclimatise as you climb. Ghar in the Hills, a homestay in Naggar, sits at a gentle valley altitude — an ideal first base before you head up towards Lahaul and the passes.
