Naggar rewards travellers who slow down. Perched on the eastern slopes of the Kullu valley between Kullu and Manali, this thousand-year-old town packs castles, temples, art and forest walks into a small, walkable area — with easy day trips fanning out in every direction. Here's how to spend three unhurried days making the most of it.
Day 1: Naggar village on foot
Start at the heart of it all: Naggar Castle, a roughly five-century-old wooden-and-stone royal residence with sweeping views over the valley. From the castle it's a 300-metre stroll to the three-tiered Tripura Sundari temple, built in deodar wood, and about a 30-minute walk uphill to the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery, the Himalayan home and studio of the Russian painter. Spend the afternoon wandering Naggar's ancient stone and pagoda temples and settling into a village cafe for tea as the light turns gold over the peaks.
Day 2: Jana Waterfall and the forest
On your second day, head out to Jana Waterfall, about 12 km from Naggar through thick pine and apple country. The falls tumble down amid the forest, and the village of Jana is well known for hearty Himachali home-style cooking — a plate of local food here is half the reason to make the trip. Walk it off on the short hike around the falls before heading back to Naggar for the evening.
Day 3: A valley day trip
For your last day, take your pick of the valley. Old Manali, up the valley, has riverside cafes and forest paths; Kullu town, down the valley, has the revered Raghunath temple and the best markets for genuine Kullu shawls; and the more adventurous can drive to Solang for paragliding and mountain views. Each is an easy half-day to full-day outing with Naggar as your base.
Practical tips
- Best time: spring blossom (Mar to Apr), summer for day trips, or autumn apples (Sep to Oct).
- Getting around: the village itself is walkable; hire a local taxi for day trips.
- Naggar Castle: open through the day with a small entry fee; carry cash for temples and cafes.
