Spring Blossom Season in the Kullu Valley

There is a short, magical window each year when the Kullu valley trades its winter greys for clouds of pink and white. This is blossom season, when the fruit orchards that blanket the slopes around Naggar burst into flower against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. If you time your trip right, it is one of the most beautiful — and least crowded — times to visit.

When the blossoms appear

Blossom season in the Kullu valley runs through March and April, though the exact timing shifts a little each year with the weather and with altitude. The lower orchards flower first and the higher slopes follow. The sequence usually begins with plum and apricot in late February and March, followed by peach, almond and cherry, and then the main event — apple blossom — from late March into April. Early April is often the sweet spot around Naggar, when whole hillsides seem to foam white and pink at once.

Where to see them around Naggar

Naggar sits in the middle of apple country, so you rarely have to go far:

  • The orchard lanes around the village — walking the paths between the castle and the surrounding hamlets takes you past flowering trees.
  • Katrain and the valley floor, about 7 km away, the widest and sunniest stretch of the valley and its “apple bowl”.
  • The Rumsu slopes above Naggar, where terraced orchards climb towards the forest.
  • The old road towards Jana, which winds through orchards and small villages.

Why spring is special

Beyond the flowers, spring brings mild days, cool nights and clear light that photographers love — pink petals in the foreground, green terraces in the middle and white summits behind. The summer-holiday crowds have not yet arrived, so village life feels calm and unhurried. It is also a lovely time for gentle walks, as the meadows green up and the higher trails begin to open.

Practical tips

  • Best time: mid-March to mid-April for the fullest bloom; watch the weather, as a late snowfall can delay things by a week.
  • What to pack: layers — spring days are warm in the sun but evenings still drop close to freezing.
  • Respect the orchards: they are working farms and someone’s livelihood. Enjoy them from the paths and always ask before entering private land or picking anything.
  • Getting around: a car or scooter helps you chase the bloom between the valley floor and the higher villages.

If you are looking for a base to enjoy the blossom, Ghar in the Hills is a cosy homestay right in Naggar village — book your stay to wake up to orchard and valley views just as the trees come into flower.

Spring is fleeting in the hills. Plan a few days in Naggar during blossom season, walk slowly, and let the valley show you why locals call these the loveliest weeks of the year.
