Everyone knows the Kullu valley for its apples in autumn, when the branches hang heavy with red fruit. Far fewer travellers see the quieter, prettier moment that comes first: apple blossom season, when for a few short weeks in spring the whole valley froths white and pink. If you can plan around it, it's one of the loveliest times to be in Naggar.
When the orchards bloom
Apple blossom in the Kullu valley usually arrives from late March into April, though the exact timing shifts a little each year with the winter's snow and the spring warmth. Lower, sunnier pockets of the valley colour first, while orchards higher up the slopes and around Naggar follow a week or two later. Plums, pears, apricots and cherries blossom around the same window, so the hillsides carry several shades of white and pale pink at once, humming with bees.
Where to see it around Naggar
You barely have to go looking — Naggar itself is ringed with orchards, and the walk up towards Rumsu or along the old terraced paths puts you right among the blossom. For the broadest sweep of flowering trees, head down to the wide, sunny bowl of the valley around Katrain, long known as the apple heartland, where orchards run right down to the Beas. The terraces above the Naggar–Manali road give lovely long views of blossom set against still-snowy peaks.
What else spring brings
Beyond the blossom, spring is simply a gentle time to travel here. Days are mild and clear, the higher passes are still capped with snow for a dramatic backdrop, and the summer crowds haven't yet arrived. It's excellent walking weather and, for photographers, a gift: soft light, flowering trees and snow peaks all in one frame.
- Best weeks: late March to mid-April, with orchards near Naggar often peaking in early to mid-April.
- What to pack: layers — spring mornings and evenings are still cold, afternoons pleasantly warm.
- Photographer's tip: shoot in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon, with snow peaks behind the blossom.
- Please note: orchards are working farms and private land — enjoy them from the paths and roadside rather than walking in among the trees.
Blossom season is short and a little unpredictable, which is part of its charm. Waking up to flowering orchards and cool mountain mornings is reason enough to come — and Ghar in the Hills, a homestay in the middle of Naggar village, puts you right among them. Come in spring, and catch the valley at its freshest.
