Getting to Naggar is one thing; getting around the Kullu valley once you're here is another. The good news is that this is one of the easier parts of Himachal to explore without your own car. Between government buses, shared cabs and private taxis, you can reach almost every village, temple and trailhead in the valley on a modest budget.
Local buses
The backbone of valley transport is the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). Green government buses run constantly along the main highway between Kullu and Manali — roughly 40 km, about 1 to 1.5 hours — leaving every half hour or so and costing only around ₹80–120. They're slow, crowded and wonderfully cheap. From this highway spine, smaller buses branch off to Naggar, up the Parvati valley to Kasol and Manikaran, and to other side valleys. For Naggar, look for buses signed via the Naggar road, or change at Patlikuhl, the junction town where the road to Naggar leaves the highway.
Shared and private taxis
Shared taxis fill the gaps the buses leave. On busy stretches like Kullu–Manali you can grab a seat for roughly ₹150–250, leaving when the vehicle is full. For flexibility — early trailhead starts, day trips with several stops, or travelling with luggage — a private taxi is worth it. Expect valley day-trip rates to run into a few thousand rupees depending on distance; agree the fare before you set off, as most local taxis don't use meters.
Practical tips
- Carry small cash. Buses and shared cabs don't take cards, and change can be scarce.
- Travel in the morning. Bus frequency and shared-taxi availability both drop after dark, especially to smaller villages.
- Allow buffer time. Mountain roads, weather and the odd monsoon landslide mean schedules are approximate.
- Note your junctions. Patlikuhl (for Naggar), Bhuntar (for the airport and Parvati valley) and Kullu (for buses south) are the main change points.
Base yourself well
The simplest way to make valley transport painless is to stay somewhere central and walkable, so you can dip in and out of day trips without long transfers. If you're looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village — your hosts can point you to the nearest bus stop and help arrange a taxi when you'd rather ride in comfort.
