Naggar sits on the quieter eastern bank of the Beas, perched between Kullu and Manali, and getting here is part of the pleasure; the last stretch winds through apple orchards and pine forest with the river below. Here is how to reach Naggar however you are travelling.
By air
The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar, about 30 km away. From Bhuntar you can take a taxi or local bus to Naggar in roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Flights to Bhuntar are limited and weather-dependent, so many travellers prefer to fly into Chandigarh and continue by road.
By train
There is no railway line right up to Naggar. The narrow-gauge line ends at Joginder Nagar, around 95 km away, while most travellers use the broad-gauge railhead at Chandigarh and drive on from there. From either station, continue by taxi or bus.
By road
Road is the most reliable way in. Naggar lies just off the main Chandigarh to Manali highway near Patlikuhal and Katrain.
- From Delhi: Overnight Volvo and deluxe buses run from Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Kullu and Manali, taking roughly 12 to 14 hours. Get off at Kullu or Patlikuhal and take a local bus or taxi to Naggar.
- From Chandigarh: About 8 hours by road via Mandi, Pandoh and Kullu.
- From Manali or Kullu: Naggar is roughly 20 km from each; frequent local buses and taxis connect both, taking 40 to 60 minutes.
Getting around once you arrive
Naggar village is compact and best explored on foot. For trips to the castle, the Roerich gallery or nearby villages, local taxis are easy to arrange, and shared buses run along the valley road.
Best time to visit
March to June brings pleasant days and clear views; September to November is crisp and beautiful after the monsoon. Winters are cold with occasional snow, while July and August can see rain and the odd landslide on mountain roads, so build in a little buffer.
