If you've spent a few slow mornings on the terrace watching the Beas churn through the valley below, you've probably wondered what it feels like to be down on that white water. The answer is about an hour away. The most popular rafting stretch in the Kullu valley runs from Pirdi, a small village roughly 4 km from Kullu town, downstream toward Jhiri and Babeli — an easy drive of around 25 km from Naggar.
The rafting stretches
There are a few options depending on how much of a thrill you're after:
- Pirdi to Jhiri — the classic run, about 7 km of Grade I and II rapids. Gentle enough for first-timers, families and nervous beginners.
- Babeli to Pirdi — a slightly punchier 10 km stretch with Grade II and III rapids for those who want more bounce.
- Longer combined runs of up to 14 km are offered when water levels allow.
Most trips last anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours on the water. The Beas generally runs at Grade II–III here, which is the sweet spot for a fun, safe ride without serious whitewater experience.
Best season
The water is at its best from March to June, and again from September to November. During the peak monsoon (July–August) rafting is often suspended when the river runs high and silty, so plan around those months. Early summer, fed by snowmelt, gives the most exciting flow.
Practical tips
- Prices vary by operator and distance, but short to medium runs typically cost a few hundred rupees per person, rising for the longer stretches.
- Wear quick-dry clothes and secure your footwear; you will get soaked.
- Life jackets and helmets are provided — always wear them and listen to your guide's safety briefing before you set off.
- Leave phones and valuables in the car or a waterproof bag; the splashes are constant.
- Choose a licensed operator with proper safety gear rather than the cheapest roadside deal.
Make a day of it
Pirdi is close to Kullu town, so you can easily pair a morning on the river with a visit to the Raghunath temple or some shawl shopping in the afternoon. From Naggar, an early start gets you to the put-in point fresh and ahead of the crowds.
If you're looking for a base to come back to after a wet, happy morning on the Beas, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar — book your stay and dry off to valley views. Ready to feel the river you've been watching from the hills? Pack a change of clothes and head down to Pirdi.
