Some treks make you work for the view. The Bhrigu Lake trek makes you work, and then hands you a glacial lake sitting in a bare alpine bowl at 14,009 feet, with the Pir Panjal range standing guard all around. It is one of the most rewarding high-altitude treks you can do from the Kullu valley, and from Naggar it is wonderfully close.
Where it is and why it's special
Bhrigu Lake sits at about 14,009 ft (4,267 m), east of Manali above the meadows of Gulaba. The lake is named after the sage Bhrigu, who is said to have meditated here, and locals consider it sacred. What sets this trek apart is how quickly you leave the forest behind and walk out onto open, rolling high-alpine meadows — the kind of wide green ridgelines you usually only see much deeper in the Himalaya.
The route and difficulty
Most itineraries begin at Gulaba, the road-head base camp about 24 km from Manali on the Manali–Leh highway. From there the trail climbs to camps at Jonker Thach and Rola Kholi before the final push to the lake. The full trek is roughly 22 km and is usually spread over four days. It is rated moderate, but do not let that fool you — you climb from around 6,500 ft to nearly 14,000 ft in a short span, so the ascents are steep and the altitude is real. Reasonable fitness and a day or two to acclimatise make all the difference.
Best season
The trek is generally open from May to September. May and June give you snow patches near the lake and lush meadows lower down; post-monsoon September brings clear skies and crisp views. The lake itself often stays partly frozen well into early summer.
Practical tips
- Acclimatise first — spend a night or two in the valley around 5,000–6,000 ft before you start.
- Go with a registered local guide or trekking operator; the upper meadows have no marked trail and weather turns fast.
- Carry layers, a windproof jacket, sturdy boots, sunscreen and plenty of water.
- There is no mobile signal for much of the route, so tell someone your plan.
Naggar makes a calm, well-placed base before and after the climb — Gulaba is an easy drive up the valley through Manali. If you'd like somewhere quiet to acclimatise and return to, Ghar in the Hills is a cosy homestay right in Naggar village, with valley views to ease you back to lower altitudes.
