A Day in Manali Town: Mall Road, Van Vihar and the Club House

Naggar's charm is its quiet, but every so often you want a day of buzz — shops, street food, a riverside stroll and a bit of people-watching. Manali town, about 22 km and an hour up the valley, delivers exactly that. Here's how to spend an easy day in the valley's liveliest hub.

Mall Road

The heart of Manali is Mall Road, a pedestrian-friendly stretch lined with shops, cafes and street food. It's the place to browse Himachali woollens, pick up dry fruits and spices, try a plate of hot momos or sip coffee while the crowds drift past. It's lively in the evenings and the social centre of town.

The Tibetan Market

Just off the main drag, the Tibetan Market is a warren of narrow lanes and little stalls. This is where to hunt for prayer wheels, singing bowls, incense, silver jewellery, thangka paintings, hand-woven carpets and shawls. Prices are negotiable and the browsing is half the fun.

Van Vihar

For a breather from the shopping, Van Vihar is a small, peaceful park of tall deodar cedars right beside the Beas, in the middle of town. Wander the shaded paths, sit by the water, or rent a pedal boat on the little pond. It's an easy, green pause in the day.

Club House

A short walk or drive from the centre along the Manalsu stream, the Club House is Manali's recreation spot — a mix of indoor games, small adventure activities and places to grab a snack and tea. It's especially handy if you're travelling with restless kids.

Practical tips

  • Mall Road is best explored on foot; park near the bus stand or the multi-level car park, as central traffic can be heavy.
  • Bargain politely in the markets — it's expected.
  • Evenings are liveliest on Mall Road; afternoons are better for the quieter parks.
  • Carry a light jacket; even summer evenings can turn cool.

A day from Naggar

An hour's drive or a local bus gets you to Manali. Many travellers like to do their shopping and town errands here, then retreat back down the valley to somewhere calmer for the night. If that sounds like you, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay in Naggar — spend the day in the crowds, then come back to orchard quiet and valley views. Bring an empty bag for the woollens; you'll fill it.
