Packing for the mountains is a balance: too little and you shiver through the evenings, too much and you lug a heavy bag up slate steps. The trick in Naggar and the wider Kullu valley is to pack for the season you are visiting and to layer cleverly, because a single mountain day can swing from warm sun to cold wind in a matter of hours.
Pack for your season
Spring and summer (April–June): Days are warm and bright, but evenings stay cool. Bring light cotton clothes and trekking trousers, plus one warm layer — a fleece or light jacket — for nights and higher day trips. Sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen are essential.
Monsoon (July to mid-September): The valley turns brilliant green, but rain is frequent and roads can be affected by landslides. Pack a good raincoat or poncho, quick-dry clothes (skip cotton jeans, which stay wet for hours), and shoes with grip. Keep a buffer day in your plans.
Autumn (mid-September–November): Crisp, clear and one of the loveliest times to visit. Layering is key — t-shirts for the day, a warm jacket for the evening.
Winter (December–February): It gets cold, and snow is common. Bring thermals, a heavy jacket, woollen sweaters, gloves, a beanie, warm socks, and proper boots with grip if you are heading to the snow.
Footwear and the small essentials
- Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes with good grip — you will be on uneven, sloping village lanes and trails.
- A compact first-aid kit with any personal medication.
- Sunscreen and lip balm — the high-altitude sun is stronger than it feels.
- A power bank and a torch or headlamp; power cuts do happen in the hills.
- A reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic.
- Offline maps saved to your phone, as signal can drop in the valleys.
A few local notes
Carry some cash — ATMs are limited in the smaller villages and not every shop or homestay takes cards or UPI reliably. Dress modestly when visiting temples, and bring a small daypack for day trips so you are not carrying everything everywhere. Whatever the season, a warm layer and a waterproof are worth their weight, even on a sunny morning.
Pack light, pack smart, and leave a little room for the apples and shawls you will inevitably want to take home. When you have somewhere comfortable to come back to each evening, mountain days are a lot easier — Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village, a warm base for exploring the Kullu valley in any season.
