Katrain: Trout Fishing and the Apple Bowl of the Kullu Valley

If you've spent a few slow mornings in Naggar, you'll have noticed how the Kullu valley opens up just to the north. That broad, sunlit stretch of orchard and river is Katrain — the widest point in the whole valley, and one of the easiest, most rewarding half-day outings you can make from the village. It sits about 7 km from Naggar on the main valley road, roughly 20 km short of Manali, so you can be there in twenty minutes.

The "Apple Bowl" of the Kullu Valley

Katrain is apple country at its most concentrated. The flat, fertile land on both banks of the Beas is wall-to-wall orchards, which is why this part of the valley is often called the Apple Bowl. Come in spring and the slopes are foaming with white-pink blossom; arrive between late August and October and the same trees are bowed under red fruit, with crates stacked at every roadside. The area is also known for its beekeeping, so look out for honey sold straight from the producer.

Trout Fishing on the Beas

Katrain is the heart of trout country in Himachal. The cold, fast water of the Beas here holds both brown and rainbow trout, and there is a government trout farm and hatchery nearby at Patlikuhl that helps stock the river. For anglers, the season runs roughly from March to October, when the water is clear and the fish are active.

A few practical things worth knowing before you cast a line:

  • Get a permit first. Angling is regulated by the state Fisheries Department, and you'll need a daily licence, usually arranged at the local fisheries office at Patlikuhl. It's inexpensive and keeps the river properly managed.
  • Bring or hire tackle. This is fly and spinning country; there's limited gear for rent, so keen anglers usually carry their own.
  • Himachal Tourism runs an Angler's Bungalow on the bank of the Beas at Katrain for those who want to stay right by the water.
  • Best hours are early morning and late afternoon, when the trout feed.

Making a Day of It

Even if you never pick up a rod, Katrain is a lovely place to simply sit by the river with a flask of tea and watch the valley go by. The drive itself, threading between orchards with the Beas alongside, is one of the prettiest short stretches in Kullu. Pair it with a stop at a roadside dhaba for trout or rajma-chawal and you have an easy, unhurried day.

Katrain works beautifully as a relaxed morning out before the afternoon heat. If you're looking for a calm base to come back to afterwards, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village, a short drive away — book your stay and wake up to the same valley views the orchards enjoy.
