Beas Kund Trek from Naggar: Source of the Beas

Beas Kund Trek from Naggar: Source of the Beas

Every traveller who spends time in the Kullu valley gets to know the Beas — the river that runs through it, past Naggar and on down to Kullu. Far fewer make the short, beautiful trek to its source: Beas Kund, a small glacial lake cradled by snow peaks above Solang. It's one of the most rewarding short treks you can do from a Naggar base.

The story of the lake

Beas Kund sits at about 3,890 m (12,772 ft), ringed by the peaks of Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak and the Seven Sisters. Local belief holds that the sage Vyas, after whom the river is named, bathed in these waters — which is why the little lake is treated as sacred.

Route and difficulty

From Naggar you drive up the valley to Solang and on to the roadhead at Dhundi (around 2,600 m). The trail then climbs gradually through meadows to the base camp at Bakarthach, and on the final day rises over boulder fields to Beas Kund itself. It's graded easy to moderate: the paths are well marked and there's no technical climbing, though the last stretch is steeper. Most people do it as a two-night, three-day trek, walking three to four hours between camps.

Best season

The trail is at its best from mid-May to June, when snow still lingers among the greening meadows, and again from September to mid-October, when the skies clear for the sharpest mountain views. Nights are cold year-round at this height, so come prepared.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: Naggar to Solang is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road; from Solang it's a short drive on to Dhundi.
  • Fitness: moderate cardio fitness is enough, but the altitude makes a gentle, steady pace important.
  • Guides: go with a registered local trekking operator who can arrange camping, permits and safe acclimatisation.
  • Pack: warm layers, waterproofs, good boots, sun protection and plenty of water.

A short trek like Beas Kund is best enjoyed without rushing. Spend a night or two in the valley first — Ghar in the Hills, a homestay right in Naggar village, makes a quiet, comfortable base to plan your trek and recover afterwards. Book your stay and wake up to valley views before you set off for the source of the Beas.
