Solang Valley: Adventure and Snow Near Manali

If anyone in your group is itching for a little adventure, point the car towards Solang Valley. This wide green meadow sits just beyond Manali and is the busiest activity hub in the Kullu valley — paragliding in summer, snow sports in winter, and big mountain scenery all year round. From a calm village like Naggar it makes a fun, full-day contrast.

Where it is and how to reach

Solang Valley lies about 14 km beyond Manali, roughly a 30–40 minute drive up from the town. From Naggar, count on around two hours each way along the valley, slightly more in peak-season traffic. The road runs through Manali, so you can easily combine the two and tack on a stop at Hadimba Temple or the Mall Road on the way back. Shared taxis and buses run up from Manali if you would rather not drive the final stretch yourself, and the last few kilometres are scenic enough that the journey is part of the fun.

What to do

  • Paragliding — the headline activity, with short and longer flights that lift you high above the meadow for views of snow-capped peaks.
  • Ropeway / cable car — a scenic ride up the slope, the relaxed option for anyone not flying.
  • Zorbing and ATV rides — rolling downhill in a giant ball, or bouncing across the meadow on a quad bike.
  • Winter snow sports — from roughly December to February the valley turns white and skiing, snowboarding and sledging take over.

Best time to visit

For adventure sports like paragliding, March to June and September to November bring the most reliable weather — clear skies and calm winds. If snow is what you are after, December to January is peak season, though heavy snowfall can briefly close the higher road. Mornings are best for paragliding before the wind picks up, so arrive early.

Practical tips

Activity prices vary by season and operator, so agree the rate and flight length before you start. Wear sturdy shoes and carry a windproof layer — it is cooler up here than in town. In winter you can hire boots and snow gear on site. Weekends and the May–June holiday rush get crowded, so a weekday visit is calmer.

Staying down the valley in Naggar means you can enjoy Solang's buzz for a day and still return to quiet, starry evenings. Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village — a restful base for day trips like this one. Book your stay, save Solang for a bright morning, and come home to the hills.
