Autumn in the Kullu Valley: Golden Orchards and Clear Mountain Days

Ask anyone who knows the Kullu valley well and many will tell you the same thing: autumn is the season they'd choose. As the summer rush fades and the monsoon clouds lift, October and November settle over Naggar with golden light, crisp air and the clearest mountain views of the year.

Why autumn is special

Autumn is the driest and sunniest stretch of the calendar here. The skies scrub clean after the monsoon, so the snow peaks that ring the valley stand out sharp and close. The deodar and poplar forests turn shades of yellow and amber, and the terraced orchards glow with the last of the season's colour — it is one of the finest times of year for photography.

The tail of the apple harvest

October also catches the end of the apple harvest. The Kullu valley's famous Red and Golden Delicious apples ripen through the late summer and into October, so you may still see laden trees, roadside crates and the whole valley smelling faintly of fruit. It is a lovely time to try fresh apples, juice and local cider straight from the orchards.

What the weather is like

October days are mild and pleasant, with temperatures roughly between 4°C and 14°C; nights turn cold, and by November there's a real bite in the air that hints at the coming winter. Days are bright and settled, ideal for walking, sightseeing and easy day trips before the high passes begin to close.

Practical tips for an autumn visit

  • Layer up: Warm days and cold evenings mean you'll want light layers plus a proper jacket for after dark.
  • Fewer crowds: The post-summer lull makes the castle, temples and cafes far more peaceful than in peak season.
  • Festival timing: The grand Kullu Dussehra usually falls in October — a spectacular week if your dates line up.
  • Book ahead for Dussehra: Rooms in the valley fill quickly around the festival, so plan early.

Autumn is made for slow mornings with a view, and there are few better places to enjoy them than an orchard-side room in Naggar. Ghar in the Hills looks straight out over the valley, so you can watch the light change over the peaks with a cup of chai in hand.

If you want the Kullu valley at its most golden and its most peaceful, come in autumn. Book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and wake up to clear skies and orchard views.
