Sethan: A Snow Village and Summer Meadow near Naggar

Tucked above Manali on the way into the Hampta Valley, Sethan is one of those places that feels like a secret even though it's barely an hour and a half from Naggar. A tiny Buddhist village ringed by mountains, it's become quietly famous for its winter snow — and it's just as lovely as a green meadow base in summer.

A different kind of village

Sethan sits at around 2,700 m and is home to the Khampa community, people of Tibetan origin who follow older Himalayan traditions. There are only a handful of houses, no crowds and an enormous sense of space, with the Dhauladhar range standing over the valley. It's a complete contrast to the busier tourist towns down on the valley floor.

Snow, igloos and skiing

From roughly December to March, Sethan is buried in snow and becomes one of the most reliable places near Manali to actually play in it. This is the valley where Himachal's first igloo stays appeared, and in a good winter you'll find igloo experiences, snow-tubing and gentle ski and snowboard slopes. If touching real powder is on your list, this beats the roadside snow points hands down.

Summer and the Hampta connection

Once the snow melts, Sethan turns into rolling green meadows and becomes a popular starting point for the Hampta Pass trek and shorter walks toward Hampta village. Spring and autumn are beautiful, quiet, and far cooler than the valley floor.

How to reach Sethan

  • Distance: about 30 km from Naggar — drive up to Manali, then on toward Prini and up a steep, winding road of some 35 hairpin bends.
  • Time: roughly 1.5 hours from Naggar in good conditions.
  • Winter access: from January to March heavy snow can make the final climb tricky; you may need a 4×4 or to walk the last stretch.
  • Permits: carry a valid photo ID; entry formalities are handled at the forest check post near Prini.

Tips

Dress far warmer than you think you need to in winter, with waterproof boots and gloves. Carry cash, as there's little connectivity up here. Start early so you're not driving the hairpins in fading light, and check road and snow conditions before you set off.

Sethan is the kind of place best enjoyed unhurried, with a warm base to return to in the valley. Ghar in the Hills in Naggar makes an easy launch pad — wake to valley views, then head up to the snow. Pack your warmest layers and go meet the quiet side of the mountains.
