If you've ever stood in Old Manali and looked up at the great pyramid of rock and snow across the valley, that's Patalsu — and yes, you can climb it. The Patalsu Peak trek is one of the Kullu valley's most satisfying short summits: high enough to feel like a real mountain, gentle enough for a reasonably fit first-timer, and close enough to Naggar to be a genuinely doable adventure.
The peak and the route
Patalsu tops out at about 4,220 m (13,944 ft) on the Pir Panjal wall above Manali. The trail begins above Old Manali and Solang village, climbing through deodar, oak and pine forest — home to the Himalayan monal — before breaking out onto open meadows and finally the rocky summit ridge. It's roughly 9 km one way with around 1,700 m of ascent, usually spread over two to three days with a night camping on the meadows.
How hard is it?
Most trekkers rate Patalsu easy-to-moderate. There's nothing technical about it, but the height gained over a short distance makes it a real workout, and the summit push is steep. Come with a decent base of fitness, break the ascent with a camp to acclimatise, and go with a registered local guide or trekking operator who can arrange tents, permits and the summit-day timing. It also helps to keep a buffer day in hand, since summit mornings are sometimes called off when the weather closes in.
Practical tips
- Best time: May to October. Skip July and August, when monsoon rain makes the trail slippery and views scarce.
- Getting there: The trailhead above Old Manali and Solang is about 35 km from Naggar — an easy morning's drive before you start walking.
- Fitness: Start walking or jogging a few weeks ahead; the elevation gain is the real challenge, not the terrain.
- Altitude: Camp a night on the way up rather than pushing for the top in a single day, and drink plenty of water.
Because the trek starts so close by, plenty of walkers spend the night before in the valley and drive up fresh at dawn. Ghar in the Hills in Naggar is a comfortable, homely base for exactly that — book your stay, sleep well, and hit the trail with the whole day ahead of you.
Patalsu is that rare thing: a summit that feels earned without demanding years of experience. Lace up, take it steady, and enjoy one of the best views in the Kullu valley from the top.
