The Nishala Walk: An Easy Forest Trail Near Naggar

Not every walk in the hills has to be a lung-busting climb to a high pass. Some of the best hours around Naggar are spent on gentle, almost level trails that wind through deodar forest to a village where life still moves slowly. The walk to Nishala is exactly that kind of outing — easy underfoot, shaded for much of the way, and quietly beautiful.

The walk

Nishala lies about four kilometres from Naggar, on the route towards the Bijli Mahadev ridge. The trail is roughly three kilometres of nearly flat path, following a forest road lined with dense stands of deodar and pine. Because there is very little climbing, it suits families, older walkers and anyone easing into mountain altitudes — you can amble out, spend time in the village, and be back within a half day.

Nishala itself is a typical Kullu village, perched on a slope that looks out over terraced fields of rice and mustard. Depending on the season those fields shift from bright paddy green to gold, and the little Chamunda Bhagwati temple at the heart of the village is worth a pause. Slate-roofed houses, apple trees and grandmothers spinning wool in the sun — it is the Kullu of a generation ago.

What to carry

  • Sturdy shoes — the path is easy but can be loose or muddy after rain.
  • Water and a snack; there are no shops once you leave Naggar.
  • A light layer, as the forest stays cool even in summer.
  • Some cash, if you would like to buy fruit or tea from a village home.

When to go

The walk is pleasant for much of the year. Spring and early summer (March to June) bring blossom and green fields; the weeks after the monsoon, from late September into November, are crisp and clear with golden harvest light. Avoid the heaviest monsoon days in July and August, when the forest floor turns slippery.

Make a morning of it

Set out early, when birdsong fills the deodars and the light slants low through the trees. Carry your breakfast, find a quiet spot above the fields, and let the morning stretch. Walks like this are the whole reason to base yourself in the village rather than rush through it. If you need somewhere to stay, Ghar in the Hills is a homestay right in Naggar — wake up to valley views and step straight onto trails like this one. Come and take the slow road.
