Naggar with Kids: A Family Travel Guide to the Kullu Valley

The Kullu Valley is one of the easiest corners of the Himalayas to visit with children, and Naggar — a quiet village perched above the Beas between Kullu and Manali — makes an especially gentle base. The air is clean, the pace is slow, and there is enough to keep curious little ones busy without long, tiring drives.

Why Naggar Works for Families

Unlike the crowds of Manali's Mall Road, Naggar is compact and walkable. Most of its highlights sit within a short stroll of one another, so you are never far from a snack, a rest stop or a shady spot to sit. The gentle gradients around the village are manageable for small legs, and there is very little traffic on the inner lanes.

Things to Do with Kids

  • Naggar Castle: A 15th-century stone-and-timber palace with wide courtyards, easy stairs and sweeping valley views. Children love spotting the carved balconies and the little museum inside.
  • Roerich Gallery grounds: The gardens are open and green, perfect for a picnic while older kids look at the paintings.
  • Riverside time: The Beas near Patlikuhl and Katrain has calm stretches where families paddle and skip stones on warm afternoons.
  • Apple orchards: In late summer many orchards around Naggar welcome visitors — a hands-on nature lesson kids remember.

Practical Tips for Parents

Pack layers even in summer; mornings and evenings are cool at around 1,800 m. Carry a basic first-aid kit, sunscreen and hats, as the mountain sun is strong. Village cafes are used to families and will happily rustle up plain rice, dal, pancakes or noodles for fussy eaters. If you are travelling by road, break the journey from Kullu (about 22 km) or Manali (about 22 km) — the winding roads can be hard on young stomachs.

Timing matters: April to June is warm and green, ideal for outdoor play, while a light dusting of winter snow (December to February) delights children but calls for proper woollens and boots. Avoid peak monsoon (July–August) when trails get slippery.

If you're looking for a base in Naggar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village — book your stay to wake up to valley views, with plenty of room for kids to run around.
