Naggar for Couples: A Quiet Romantic Getaway in the Kullu Valley

Naggar for Couples: A Quiet Romantic Getaway in the Kullu Valley

There is something about Naggar that slows two people down. Perched on a forested slope above the Beas at around 1,760 metres, this old capital of Kullu is all deodar trees, terraced orchards and stone lanes that were built for walking, not hurrying. If you're after a romantic getaway that trades nightlife and crowds for quiet mornings and long views, few places in Himachal do it better.

Slow mornings and mountain views

The nicest thing a couple can do in Naggar is very little. Wake to mist lifting off the valley, carry a cup of chai to a sunny ledge, and watch the far peaks catch the first light. The village faces east across the valley, so sunrises here are genuinely special — and completely free.

If you're looking for a base in the village, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar — the kind of place where you can wake up to valley views and plan the day slowly over breakfast.

Wander the heritage lanes together

Naggar Castle, built around 1460 by Raja Sidh Singh, is the heart of the old village. Wander its wood-and-stone courtyards, find the little Jagti Patt temple with its famous stone slab, and take in the valley from the ramparts. A short walk away, the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery holds the luminous Himalayan paintings of the Russian artist who made Naggar his home. It's open 9am to 5pm, closed on Mondays, with a small entry fee of around Rs 50 that also covers the Urusvati museum up the hill.

Walks made for two

Naggar is threaded with gentle trails. The easy forest walk to Nishala village winds through pine and terraced fields and is almost level — perfect for an unhurried afternoon. For something more ambitious, the meadows on the way toward Chandrakhani reward you with wide Himalayan views. Pack water, wear proper shoes, and start early.

Practical tips for couples

  • Best time: April to June for warm days and blossom; September to November for clear skies and golden light.
  • Getting there: Naggar is about 22 km from both Kullu and Manali; the nearest airport is Bhuntar, roughly 40 km away.
  • Evenings: pack a warm layer — even summer nights in the hills turn cool.
  • Pace: keep it loose. Two unhurried days beat four rushed ones.

Naggar rewards couples who let the mountains set the tempo. Book a few slow days, leave room in the plan for doing nothing, and let the valley do the rest. When you're ready to plan your stay, Ghar in the Hills is a warm, homely base right in the village — a lovely place to begin.
