Perched above the Kullu valley with the Beas river winding far below, Naggar Castle is the kind of place that makes you slow down and look. It is one of the oldest standing structures in the region, and a visit here is the easiest way to step into the long history of the old Kullu kingdom.
A castle built in 1460
Naggar Castle was built around 1460 AD by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu, when Naggar served as the capital of the kingdom. For centuries it was the royal residence of the Kullu rulers. In 1846, after the British took over Kullu and Kangra, Raja Gyan Singh sold the castle to Major Hay, the first Assistant Commissioner of Kullu, and during the British years it even served as a courthouse. In 1978 the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation took it over and turned it into a heritage rest house.
The architecture is the real star
The castle is a beautiful example of traditional Himachali Kath-Kuni architecture, where alternating layers of stone and deodar wood are stacked without any cement or mortar. This interlocking technique makes the building remarkably earthquake-resistant, which is why it has survived for more than 500 years. Walk the wooden balconies and you will understand why people linger here for the views alone.
What to see inside
- A small gallery displaying prints connected to the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich, who made nearby Naggar his home.
- A basement museum with shawls, carpets, traditional instruments like the nagara, and other pieces of Kullu's culture.
- The Jagti Patt temple within the complex, built around a sacred stone slab tied to local legend.
- Wide wooden verandahs that frame the snow-tipped Pir Panjal range across the valley.
Practical tips
The castle is open from 9 am to 6 pm, all days of the week. Entry is modest, around Rs 50 per person. It sits in the heart of Naggar, an easy walk or short drive from the village centre. Mornings are quietest and the light over the valley is gorgeous, so try to arrive soon after opening. Give yourself an hour to wander, and carry a light layer even in summer, as the stone interiors stay cool.
If you are looking for a base to explore Naggar at an unhurried pace, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village, a short stroll from the castle. Book your stay to wake up to the same valley views the Kullu kings once enjoyed.
