In 1846, after the British took control of Kullu and Kangra, the castle passed to Major Hay, an Assistant Commissioner, and for a time it even functioned as a courthouse. It later came to the Punjab Government, and in 1978 the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation took it over and preserved it as a heritage property open to visitors.
What to expect inside
The castle is built in the traditional Himachali style, with alternating layers of stone and deodar wood that have helped it survive earthquakes over the centuries. Wander the courtyards and wooden balconies and you'll find the small Jagti Patt temple, said to house a sacred stone slab with its own legend. There's a modest gallery space and plenty of carved detail to admire.
