Every November, the town of Rampur Bushahr on the Sutlej comes alive with one of Himachal's oldest trade gatherings. The International Lavi Fair mixes market stalls, folk music and centuries of Himalayan trading history, and it is well worth planning around if you are travelling in the hills in autumn.
A fair born of a trade treaty
The fair traces back to a trade treaty between the old Bushahr state and Tibet, signed in the late 17th century. The agreement reportedly ended taxes on merchants trading in each other's territory. Traders from Tibet and as far as Central Asia arrived with horses, dry fruit, wool, pashmina and sheep, and returned with salt, jaggery and other supplies from Rampur. Chaumukhi horses were among the best-known animals traded here.
Dates
The main festival is held from 11 to 14 November each year, and the trade stalls often continue through the month. Exact programmes can shift, so check with the local administration or tourism office before travelling.
What to expect
- Trade stalls: shawls, woollens, dry fruit, utensils, local handicrafts and everyday goods, with stalls spread across the main fair ground and along the highway.
- Evening programmes: cultural nights with singers and folk performers are the main draw after dark.
- Local flavour: look for warm woollens, Kinnauri and Kullu-style caps and seasonal fruit.
- Crowds: the town gets busy, especially during the evening functions.
How to reach Rampur
Rampur Bushahr lies on the Shimla–Kinnaur highway, in Shimla district. It is reached by road from Shimla, and buses and taxis run regularly. From the Kullu Valley, the usual route is via Aut and Luhri or via Shimla, and the drive is long, so plan an overnight stay rather than a rushed day trip.
Best way to enjoy it
- Book accommodation well ahead, as rooms fill up during the fair.
- Carry warm clothes. November nights in the Sutlej valley are cold.
- Bring cash for small stalls, and bargain politely.
- Go in the afternoon to browse stalls, then stay for the evening programme.
- Respect local customs and ask before photographing people.
Combine it with the hills
Autumn is a lovely time to travel across Himachal. The apple harvest has ended, skies are clear and the first snow dusts the high peaks. Many travellers pair Rampur with a trip to Sarahan, Kinnaur or the Kullu Valley.
