Kheerganga is one of the Parvati Valley's best-loved day treks: a forested climb through pine and deodar to a high meadow with a natural hot spring, with big views over the valley. It suits beginners with a reasonable level of fitness, and it is a rewarding day out from the Parvati side of the Kullu district.
The route at a glance
The trek starts at Barshaini, the last motorable point in the upper Parvati Valley, and covers roughly 12 to 13 km one way. Most people take four to six hours going up, depending on pace and weather. The grade is easy to moderate, with a steady climb rather than technical sections.
- Via Nakthan and Rudra Nag: The most popular route. You pass the small settlement of Nakthan and the pretty Rudra Nag waterfall before the final climb.
- Via Kalga: A shorter but steeper alternative that starts near the village of Kalga.
- Via Tosh: A longer approach that joins the main trail around Nakthan.
What to expect on the trail
The first stretch crosses the Parvati river on a bridge and climbs through apple orchards and villages. Further up, the forest closes in and small tea stalls offer chai, maggi and parathas. As you near the top the trees open out into a meadow ringed with peaks, and the hot spring sits in a small temple area, a welcome reward for tired legs.
Please check current rules before you go. Overnight camping and staying at the top has been restricted in recent seasons, and authorities have advised day-trekkers to start early and finish the descent in the afternoon. Local guides and the nearest forest or police post can confirm what applies this season.
Best time to go
March to June and September to November are the most comfortable months. Monsoon (July and August) brings landslide risk and slippery trails, and heavy winter snow can close the route altogether.
Getting there and costs
- Barshaini is about 20 to 22 km from Kasol by road, and a bus or shared taxi connects the two.
- From Bhuntar, the valley's nearest airport town, buses to Barshaini take roughly two hours.
- A solo day trek typically costs ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 including food and transport, though prices vary.
- From Naggar, plan on a long travel day: base yourself in Naggar and start before dawn, or break the journey in the Parvati Valley.
Packing tips
Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, carry a rain jacket, 1.5 to 2 litres of water, snacks, sunscreen and a warm layer for the top. A towel and a spare set of dry clothes are useful if you plan to soak in the spring. Carry cash, as there is little network or ATM access on the trail. Carry out whatever you carry in, so the meadow stays clean.
