Kasol and Tosh: A Parvati Valley Escape from Naggar

Some of the best days from a Naggar base are spent in the Parvati Valley, a green gorge of pine forest, hot springs and rushing river that branches off the Kullu–Manali highway. Two names sit at the heart of any first trip: Kasol, the riverside traveller hub, and Tosh, the laid-back village perched high above it. Together they make a perfect one- or two-night escape.

Where they are and how to reach

Everything in the Parvati Valley begins at Bhuntar, the small town on the main highway where the valley road turns off. From Naggar it is roughly a two-hour drive down to Bhuntar and then about 31 km along the Parvati river to Kasol. Buses run regularly from Bhuntar, or you can hire a taxi for the day. Kasol sits at around 1,600 m, so the weather stays mild even in summer.

Tosh is further up the valley. From Kasol it is about 20 km by road to Barshaini, the last motorable point, followed by a short, scenic 30–40 minute uphill walk to the village. Tosh sits near 2,400 m, with snow peaks filling the skyline in every direction.

Things to do

  • Riverside time in Kasol — the Parvati river is the main draw; find a flat rock, dip your feet and watch the valley go by.
  • Cafe hopping — Kasol is known for its mix of Israeli, Indian and continental food, perfect after a long drive.
  • A night in Tosh — quieter and cheaper than Kasol, with simple guesthouses and huge mountain views; ideal for slow mornings with chai.
  • Onward treks — the famous Kheerganga hot-spring trek and the mysterious village of Malana both start from this valley if you have extra days.

Best time to visit

March to June brings pleasant days and good trekking weather. September to November offers clear skies and thinner crowds after the monsoon. December to February is cold and often snowy in Tosh — beautiful, but check road conditions before you set off. Avoid peak monsoon (July–August), when the valley road can be prone to landslides.

Practical tips

Carry cash, as ATMs are few once you pass Bhuntar. Mobile signal fades higher up the valley, so download maps in advance. Pack a fleece even in summer — evenings in Tosh are chilly. And start early; the drive down and back makes for a long day if you are only going for the day.

If you want an easy launchpad for the Parvati Valley, Ghar in the Hills in Naggar puts you within striking distance of Bhuntar and the valley road, with quiet valley views to come home to. Plan your dates, pack light, and let the Parvati river do the rest — book your stay and use Naggar as your calm base between adventures.
