Jana Waterfall: A Scenic Day Out from Naggar

If you have a day to spare in Naggar and a soft spot for waterfalls and home-cooked mountain food, the short trip up to Jana is hard to beat. Tucked into the hills above Naggar, Jana village and its waterfall make for a relaxed half-day escape into deep-green Kullu countryside.

Where it is and how to get there

Jana village lies about 11 km from Naggar, reached by a winding hill road through forest and orchards, and the drive itself is lovely. A taxi is the easiest option, and the road is fine for small cars right up to the village. From Jana, a short, scenic walk of around 20 to 25 minutes along narrow, rocky lanes brings you to the falls.

The waterfall and the village

The Jana waterfall is a modest but pretty cascade of around 30 feet, set among thick greenery; it is more about the peaceful setting and the walk than sheer scale. Jana itself is one of the larger villages in the Kullu district, with traditional wooden houses and a genuinely local, unhurried feel.

Do not miss the local food

For many visitors, the real highlight is lunch. The small dhabas near the falls are known for hearty Himachali home cooking, often served on a thali. Look out for:

  • Siddu: A soft steamed bread, sometimes filled with a walnut or poppy-seed paste, served with ghee.
  • Rajma-chawal: Mountain-grown kidney beans with rice, simple and satisfying.
  • Local sides: Saag, kadhi, makki roti, jaggery, homemade desi ghee and walnut chutney.

Practical tips

  • Best time: The falls are fullest just after the monsoon; spring and autumn are ideal for the drive and the walk.
  • Footwear: The path to the falls is rocky, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • Cash: Carry some, as small village eateries may not take cards.

A trip like this is exactly why Naggar makes such a good base, with quiet villages and hidden corners just a short drive away. Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay in Naggar village, and a comfortable place to plan your day out to Jana and return to in the evening.
