High above the Kullu valley, the pyramid-shaped summit of Deo Tibba (6,001 m) watches over Naggar and the villages around it. You don't need to climb the peak to feel its pull — the Deo Tibba Base Camp trek takes you into a world of glacial meadows, moraine fields and wildflowers right at the foot of the mountain, and the trailhead sits just up the valley from Naggar.
Where the trek begins
The walk starts near Jagatsukh, an old temple village about 10 km up the valley from Naggar on the way to Manali. From Naggar you drive to Jagatsukh and on to the roadhead at Khanol, where the trail leaves the road and climbs into pine forest. Because the start is so close, Naggar makes a calm, unhurried base for the day or two before you set off.
The route, day by day
From Khanol the path climbs gently through thick pine to the first campsite at Chhika. From there it follows the Jagatsukh river through forest that gives way to boulders and wildflower meadows, opening onto the wide grassy bowl of Seri — once a glacial lake. Beyond Seri the trail crosses streams and climbs through moraine to Tainta, and finally up to the base camp itself at around 4,400 m, with Deo Tibba and the neighbouring Indrasan peak filling the skyline. Most itineraries run six nights and seven days at an easy pace.
Difficulty and fitness
This is a moderate to strenuous trek rather than a casual ramble. There's no technical climbing, but you're walking over boulders and moraine at altitude, so a few weeks of cardio beforehand makes a real difference. Going with a registered local guide or organised group is strongly recommended — they handle permits, camping and the safe pacing your body needs to acclimatise.
Best season and practical tips
- Best months: May to October, when the high meadows are clear of snow.
- Altitude: base camp sits near 4,400 m, so build in time to acclimatise and drink plenty of water.
- Pack: layered warm clothing, sturdy waterproof boots, a good sleeping bag, sun protection and a basic first-aid kit.
- Getting there: drive from Naggar to Jagatsukh and Khanol — roughly 30 to 40 minutes by taxi.
