If you have ever wanted to stand on a high Himalayan pass without committing to a brutal climb, the Chandrakhani Pass trek is made for you. Best of all, the trail begins right at Naggar, so you can roll out of the village and onto the mountain in the same morning.
The trek at a glance
Chandrakhani Pass sits at roughly 3,660 metres (12,180 feet). The classic route runs about 20 km over 3 nights and 4 days, with a gradual gain in altitude that makes it kinder than most pass treks. It is graded easy to moderate, and unusually for a high pass, there are no tricky boulder sections to scramble through.
The route and its history
The trail climbs from Naggar through the village of Rumsu, then up through forests of oak and rhododendron to high meadows. This was historically a trade and shepherd route connecting Naggar and Rumsu to the famously secluded village of Malana. Today trekkers follow the same path. From the top, the views open up dramatically: the Dhauladhar range, Parvati valley, Malana valley and the pyramid of Deo Tibba, with the snow giants of the Spiti border far beyond. Many trekkers descend the steep far side to reach Malana by evening.
Best time to go
- May to September: the most popular window, with accessible trails, alpine flowers and clear views.
- December to April: a snow trek for the more adventurous, with the meadows under white.
- Avoid the peak monsoon weeks of July and August if you can, when the trail gets slippery.
What to carry
Even on an easy grade, this is high ground. Bring warm layers, a windproof jacket, sturdy waterproof shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen, and plenty of water. Go with a registered local guide or operator, as trails can be confusing in the meadows and weather changes fast. Spend a day acclimatising in Naggar before you set off.
The smartest way to start strong is to arrive a day early and rest at altitude. Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar, an ideal base to acclimatise, sort your gear and begin the Chandrakhani trail well rested. Book your stay before you lace up.
