Burans Season in Himachal: When and Where to See Rhododendrons

Burans, the Himalayan rhododendron, is one of the loveliest sights of the Himachal spring. Whole hillsides turn red and deep pink, and the flowers are also used locally in juices and syrups. If you are planning a trip for March to May, here is how to time it.

When Does It Bloom?

The bloom follows altitude. It typically begins around March in forests near Dharamshala and Shimla, climbs higher through April, and continues into May at upper elevations. The flowers generally carpet slopes between roughly 2,500 and 3,000 m. Exact timing shifts from year to year with the winter snow and spring temperatures, so treat these months as a guide rather than a promise.

Where to Look

Forested hill walks in the Kangra and Shimla regions are well known for burans. In the Kullu valley, look for oak and rhododendron forests on higher trails above village level, where the climate stays cool in spring. Ask local guides about current conditions, as access and bloom change with the season.

Making the Most of the Season

  • Go early: mornings offer clearer light and fewer clouds on the peaks.
  • Choose easy trails: forest walks of a few hours are plenty, and you can enjoy flowers without a demanding trek.
  • Dress in layers: spring weather swings from sunny to chilly within a day.
  • Check road status: higher passes may still hold snow into spring.
  • Stay on the trail: avoid picking flowers or trampling undergrowth so the forest remains healthy.

Pair It With Other Spring Sights

Spring is also the time of apple blossom in the valley, with orchards turning pale white and pink. Combine a forest walk with a stroll through the Naggar village lanes, a visit to the castle, and the nearby Roerich gallery for a full spring itinerary. Weather is generally comfortable, though evenings still call for a jacket.

A Note on Burans Juice

Buransh squash and juice are popular local products. Buy from reputable shops and check that the product is sealed and labelled.

If you're looking for a base in Naggar for the spring season, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village — a comfortable place to return to after a morning on the trails.

Spring in the Himalaya is short and lovely. Watch the weather, keep your plans flexible, and head out early. Book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and wake up to valley views in bloom.
