Bijli Mahadev: The Lightning Temple Trek Above Kullu

High on a ridge above the meeting of the Beas and Parvati rivers sits Bijli Mahadev, a Shiva temple with one of the most striking legends in Himachal. At about 2,460 metres, it offers wide views over the Kullu and Parvati valleys and is a rewarding half-day outing for anyone based around Naggar.

The Lightning Legend

Bijli means lightning, and the name comes from a local belief: lightning is said to strike the Shivling roughly once every twelve years, shattering it. Temple priests then piece the lingam back together using butter and a paste of flour and grain, and it is said to return to a solid form. Whatever you believe, the story adds a sense of wonder to the climb.

The Temple

The shrine is built in the traditional wood-and-stone style of the region. A tall wooden staff, said to be a deodar pole of great height, rises beside it and catches the eye from far away. Local tradition links the site to the Pandavas. The setting is peaceful, with deodar forest and open meadow all around.

How to Reach It

  • By road: A road leads up from Kullu to Kashawri village. Check current conditions, as hill roads can be rough after rain.
  • On foot: From the trailhead, the final stretch is about 3 km through deodar forest. It is a steady uphill walk of roughly one to two hours.
  • From Naggar: Approaches also exist from the Naggar side, and local drivers know the way. A morning start gives the clearest skies.

The View

On a clear day you can see the confluence of the Beas and Parvati below, the town of Kullu and the snow ranges beyond. Mornings are usually clearest, before clouds build in the afternoon.

Best Time to Visit

April to June and September to November are ideal. The month of Sawan sees many devotees. Winter snowfall can make the upper path difficult, and during heavy monsoon the trail is slippery.

Practical Tips

  • Wear good walking shoes and carry water and light snacks.
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the shrine.
  • Avoid the climb during thunderstorms, for obvious reasons.
  • Carry some cash for offerings and tea at small stalls nearby.
  • Take your litter back down with you.
