Bhekhli Mata Temple: A Hilltop Viewpoint Above Kullu

Bhekhli Mata Temple: A Hilltop Viewpoint Above Kullu

Most travellers rushing between Kullu and Manali never look up at the ridges above the valley floor. That is a pity, because one of the finest viewpoints in the whole Kullu valley sits on a green shoulder high above Kullu town — the temple of Bhekhli Mata, also known locally as the Jagannathi Devi temple. It is an easy half-day escape from Naggar, and it rewards you with a panorama you will not forget.

The temple and its setting

The shrine stands in Bhekhli village, roughly 11 km from Kullu town and about 1,800 metres above sea level. It is a modest hill temple to the goddess, wrapped in deodar and fruit trees, and it carries the quiet, lived-in feeling of a village deity's home rather than a tourist site. Local families climb here for blessings, and during the valley's festivals the goddess plays her part in the wider web of Kullu's deity culture.

That view

The real reward is the outlook. From the ridge you look straight down over Kullu town, the Beas threading through the valley, and the Dhalpur maidan where the great Dussehra fair is held, with rank after rank of orchard-covered hillsides beyond. Directly across the valley, on its own high spur, you can pick out the Bijli Mahadev temple. On a clear morning the light here is extraordinary — bring a camera and take your time.

Getting there from Naggar

Naggar sits about 20 km up the valley from Kullu. Drive or take a bus down to Kullu town, cross the Beas, and follow the winding hill road up towards Bhekhli — it is roughly a 9 km climb by road from the Kullu bridge. If you enjoy walking, you can leave the vehicle lower down and hike the last stretch through the villages; the views open up the whole way. Reckon on a gentle half-day round trip from Naggar.

  • Distance: ~30 km from Naggar, via Kullu town
  • Entry: free; it is an active village temple, so dress modestly and remove shoes at the shrine
  • Best time: October to March for the clearest valley views, spring for blossom; avoid heavy monsoon days when the hill road turns slippery
  • Tip: carry water and go in the morning, when the haze is lowest and the light best for photos

Bhekhli pairs beautifully with the Bijli Mahadev trek across the valley if you want a fuller day, or stands on its own as a slow, contemplative morning. If you are looking for a base to explore Kullu's quieter corners, Ghar in the Hills is a cosy homestay right in Naggar village — a calm place to come back to after a day on the ridges.

Plan your visit

Bhekhli Mata is the kind of place that reminds you the Kullu valley is best seen from above. Come for the goddess, stay for the view, and let the morning unfold slowly. Book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and wake up to valley views before you set off.
