Just above McLeodganj, a cluster of small villages and forest paths offers some of the easiest and most rewarding walking in the Dhauladhar foothills. Bhagsu Nag, its waterfall and the village of Dharamkot make a relaxed day out if you are travelling through the Kangra Valley on a longer Himachal circuit from Naggar.
Bhagsu Nag Temple
The Bhagsu Nag temple is a Shiva shrine at the heart of Bhagsu, and locals believe the water here has healing powers. The temple has a stone tank where pilgrims bathe, and it is a calm place to stop early in the morning. Dress modestly, remove your shoes at the entrance and keep your voice low. Bhagsu is about 2 km from Dharamkot and a short drive or walk from McLeodganj.
Bhagsu Waterfall
From the temple, a gentle trail of roughly 30 minutes leads to the waterfall, sitting at around 2,100 m. The path is easy but can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with a good grip. Visit on a weekday morning if you want some quiet; weekends and the May to June holiday rush bring crowds. The pool is popular for picnics, but check the water level before going near it, especially during the monsoon.
Dharamkot Village
Dharamkot is a small hill village about 3 km from McLeodganj, either a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride or a one to two hour walk from the main square. It is known for yoga and meditation courses, quiet cafes and long views over the Kangra Valley. It also serves as the usual starting point for the Triund trek, which takes about 4 to 5 hours from here and reaches roughly 2,850 m.
Galu Devi Temple
A short walk through dense forest from Dharamkot brings you to the Galu Devi temple, a small shrine in a deodar-lined setting. Take off your shoes, cover your shoulders and knees, and carry water because there are few shops on the path.
Best Season
- March to June: pleasant, with temperatures roughly in the 15 to 30 degree range, though May and June are busy.
- July to September: monsoon brings lush green slopes but heavy rain and slippery paths.
- October to February: crisp and clear, cold at night, with snow possible in December and January. A few cafes and stays may close in the deepest winter.
How to Get There
Gaggal airport near Dharamshala is about 22 km from McLeodganj, and the nearest railhead is Kangra Mandir station, about 26 km away. From the Kullu valley, plan a long day by road or an overnight stop in the Kangra Valley, and check mountain road conditions before leaving.
Practical Tips
- Carry a reusable bottle and take your rubbish back with you.
- Pack a warm layer; evenings in Dharamkot are cool even in summer.
- Expect power cuts and patchy internet in the smaller villages.
When you are back in the Kullu valley, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar, a restful base to unpack after a few days on the road.
Plan an unhurried morning at Bhagsu, add a walk to the waterfall and finish with tea in Dharamkot. When your route returns to Naggar, book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and wake up to valley views.
