The Triund Trek: A Dhauladhar Ridge Above McLeodganj

Some treks earn their reputation by being hard. Triund earns its by being easy — a broad grassy ridge you can reach in an afternoon, yet one that puts you nose-to-nose with the great grey wall of the Dhauladhar. It is the most loved short trek in the Kangra region, and for anyone using Naggar as a Himachal base, it makes a rewarding overnight escape to the far side of the valley.

Where Triund is and what it's like

Triund is a saddle at about 2,850 m (9,350 ft), sitting on the shoulder of the Dhauladhar range above McLeodganj, the upper town of Dharamshala. The trail begins near the Gallu Devi temple, roughly 3 km above McLeodganj, and climbs through oak and rhododendron forest before breaking out onto open meadow. From the top the view splits in two: behind you the green Kangra Valley falls away toward the plains, and ahead the snow-streaked Dhauladhar peaks rise almost vertically, close enough to feel.

The walk itself

From Gallu Devi it is about 9 km to the ridge, and most walkers take four to six hours up depending on fitness and stops. The path is well trodden and needs no technical skill, though the final stretch — a set of switchbacks locally nicknamed the "22 curves" — makes you work. Simple tea stalls appear along the way selling chai, Maggi and water, so you don't need to carry heavy supplies.

You can do Triund as a long day hike, but the reward for staying is the light. Camping overnight on the ridge lets you watch the sun set over the Kangra Valley and rise over the Dhauladhar the next morning — the reason most people come. Carry warm layers even in summer; the ridge is exposed and nights are cold.

Best time to go

March to June and September to November are the sweet spots, with clear skies and comfortable daytime temperatures. The monsoon (July and August) brings slippery trails and leeches, while deep winter can bury the ridge in snow — beautiful, but only for prepared trekkers.

How to reach Triund from Naggar

Triund sits on the far, western side of the valley system, so treat it as part of a Kangra–Dharamshala trip rather than a same-day dash. From Naggar it is roughly 215–225 km by road via Kullu, Mandi and Palampur, about six to eight hours of driving to McLeodganj. Base yourself in the Dharamshala area for a night, drive or take a taxi up to Gallu Devi, and start walking. The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), and the nearest broad-gauge railhead is Pathankot.

If you're planning a Himachal trip and want a calm valley base before heading across to the Dhauladhar, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village — book your stay to wake up to Kullu valley views before you set off. Lace up, pack a warm layer, and let Triund show you both sides of the mountains in a single sunrise.
