Khajjiar: The 'Mini Switzerland of India' in Chamba

Some places in Himachal make you stop and rub your eyes, and Khajjiar is one of them. A wide, saucer-shaped meadow ringed by tall deodar cedars, with a small lake at its heart and snow-dusted peaks on the horizon — it earned the nickname "Mini Switzerland of India" honestly. If you are already exploring the Kullu valley from Naggar, Khajjiar makes a worthy addition to a longer Himachal loop through the Chamba district.

Where is Khajjiar?

Khajjiar sits at about 1,980 metres (6,500 feet) in Chamba district, roughly 24 km from the hill station of Dalhousie and around 22 km from Chamba town. The meadow itself is a broad grassy plateau fringed by one of the finest deodar forests in the state. At its centre lies the shallow Khajjiar Lake, slowly silting into a floating island of weed, which only adds to the storybook feel.

Things to do

  • Walk the meadow. The open ground is free to roam. Early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, is magical.
  • Khajji Nag Temple. A golden-domed temple dating to around the 12th century, dedicated to the serpent god Khajji Nag, sits at the edge of the glade and gives the village its name.
  • Adventure activities. Zorbing, horse riding, paragliding and short forest walks are on offer, usually from around ₹300 upward.
  • Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. A short drive away, this deodar-and-oak sanctuary is good for gentle nature walks and birdlife.

Practical tips

There is no significant entry fee for the meadow itself, though you may pay small parking or activity charges. The best months are March to June for green meadows and clear views, and September to November after the monsoon. Winters bring snow and can close roads. Carry a light layer even in summer — the deodar shade stays cool.

Getting there from Naggar

Khajjiar is a long haul from Naggar, so treat it as part of a broader Chamba–Dalhousie trip rather than a day trip. Drive down the Kullu valley to Mandi, then via Jogindernagar and Palampur towards Chamba, or approach from Pathankot. Reckon on a full day of travel each way, and plan two or three nights in the region.

If you're using Naggar as your Himalayan base before heading further afield, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in the village — book your stay to wake up to valley views and plan your onward journey over chai. Khajjiar rewards those who take their time: give it a slow morning walk, and you'll see why the comparison to Switzerland has stuck.
