Most people come up to Manali for the mountains, but tucked into the town are two of the calmest, most colourful corners in the whole valley: its Tibetan monasteries. They make a lovely, gentle half-day from Naggar — a change of pace from treks and viewpoints, and a window into the Tibetan community that has made this part of Himachal home since the 1960s.
Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa
The best known of the two is the Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa, often simply called the Manali Gompa. It was built in 1960 by Tibetan refugees, and it's an easy stroll — only about 500 m — from Manali's Mall Road. You'll know it by its yellow pagoda-style roof and tiered tower.
Step inside and the walls come alive with intricate wooden carvings, bright prayer flags, carpets and murals telling stories from the Buddha's life. Look for the painted Kalachakra, the "wheel of life," and the imagery around the philosophy of non-violence. A few practical notes:
- Timings: the main shrine is generally open from around 6 AM to 6 PM (seasonal variations apply).
- Entry: free, and open to everyone — you don't need to be Buddhist to visit.
- Etiquette: remove your shoes before entering the shrine, dress modestly, walk clockwise around the shrine, and ask before photographing monks or the interior.
Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa
A short walk away is the second monastery, the Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa. It's a little newer and grander in feel, best known for a large gilded Buddha statue that glows in the light from the windows. Together the two gompas are an important religious centre for Buddhists in the region, and a peaceful place to sit for a while.
Both monasteries have small shops and stalls where Tibetan families sell carpets, handicrafts and woollens — a good place to pick up a souvenir directly from the makers.
Making a Day of It from Naggar
Manali is roughly 20 km up the valley from Naggar, an easy drive of under an hour. The monasteries pair naturally with a wander along Mall Road and a meal in town, so a relaxed plan might be: late-morning drive up, the two gompas, lunch, and back to the quiet of Naggar by evening. The monasteries are most pleasant in the morning light, before the Mall Road crowds build.
It's the kind of unhurried outing that's nicest when you have a calm place to return to. Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village — book your stay and trade the bustle of Manali for valley views at the end of the day.
