High on the road that climbs from Manali toward the Rohtang Pass, a curtain of white water tumbles down through birch and deodar forest. Rahala Falls (sometimes spelled Rahalla or Rehala) is one of those stops that most travellers rush past on the way to the snow — but it rewards anyone who lingers, and it slots neatly into a big mountain day out from Naggar.
What to expect
The falls are formed by glacial meltwater, so the flow is icy even in high summer and at its most dramatic once the snows begin to melt. At an altitude of around 2,500 m, the setting is pure high-Himalaya — silver birch, cedar, and, on a clear day, snow-capped peaks framing the water. It is a scenic photo stop and a fine place to stretch your legs rather than a swimming spot; the current and cold are not to be underestimated.
How to reach it from Naggar
Rahala Falls sits on the Manali-Leh highway, roughly 27-29 km above Manali and about 23 km short of Rohtang, past the village of Kothi. From Naggar, drive down to Manali (about an hour) and then climb the Rohtang road. A taxi for the day is the simplest option, as the route involves gaining serious altitude on mountain roads.
- Altitude: around 2,500 m
- From Naggar: roughly 2 hours by road (via Manali)
- Best season: roughly May to October, once the Rohtang road is open and snowmelt is strong
- Permits: the falls lie beyond Gulaba on the Rohtang route, so private vehicles may need the Rohtang/Gulaba permit — check current rules, or let a local taxi handle it
Tips for the day
Start early: the Rohtang road gets busy and weather turns quickly at altitude. Carry a warm layer even in summer, since it is noticeably colder up here than in the valley. If you're prone to altitude discomfort, take the climb slowly and stay hydrated. Pair the falls with other stops on the same road for a full day of high-mountain scenery.
For a base that keeps you close to all of this without the crowds of Manali, Ghar in the Hills is a homestay in Naggar with easy access up the valley — a quiet place to come back to after a big day on the Rohtang road.
Rahala Falls is a reminder that some of the valley's finest sights are the ones you're tempted to drive past. Slow down, take the photo, feel the spray. Planning a Himachal trip around Naggar? Book your stay and build your mountain days from here.
