Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary: A Cedar Forest Walk in Chamba

Between the colonial hill station of Dalhousie and the meadow of Khajjiar, in Chamba district, lies a thick belt of deodar, oak and rhododendron forest set aside as the Kalatop–Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the easiest places in western Himachal to walk quietly under tall cedars, and with luck, spot Himalayan wildlife. If your Himachal trip stretches beyond the Kullu valley, this makes a refreshing half-day stop.

What you can see

The sanctuary is home to Himalayan black bears, leopards, barking deer, jackals and Himalayan grey langurs. Birdwatchers look out for the Himalayan monal, Himachal's state bird, and the Eurasian jay. Honestly, big animals are rarely seen on a short daytime walk, so go for the forest atmosphere and treat any sighting as a bonus.

Timings and entry fee

  • Timings: typically around 7 am to 6 pm. Daytime visits are best.
  • Entry fee: roughly ₹250 for Indian visitors and ₹350 for foreign visitors, with an extra charge if you bring a private vehicle. Fees are revised from time to time, so confirm at the gate.
  • Best season: September to May. Winter brings snow and a hush that many travellers love, but roads can be slippery.

How to get there

Kalatop is about 12 km from Dalhousie, roughly 45 minutes by taxi or private vehicle, and about 15 km from Khajjiar, around 50 minutes by road. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 80 km away, and the nearest airport is Gaggal in Kangra, around 130 km. From Naggar, this is a long drive, so most travellers combine it with a few days in the Chamba region, a stop at Chamba town and perhaps Bharmour.

Walking in the sanctuary

Popular trails run from Kalatop towards Lakkar Mandi and on to Khajjiar. Paths are wide and shaded, suitable for families and casual walkers. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and a light jacket, and keep to marked paths. Forest rest houses inside the sanctuary allow overnight stays and improve your chances of seeing wildlife at dawn and dusk; permissions are arranged through the forest department, so enquire well ahead.

Tips from a local friend

  • Start early. Birds and animals are most active in the first hours after sunrise.
  • Hire a local guide if you want to understand the forest and its animals.
  • Keep voices low, never feed wildlife, and carry all your rubbish out.
  • Pair the visit with Khajjiar's grassy bowl and small lake for a relaxed day.
  • Check weather forecasts; monsoon rain can close trails and make roads risky.
