Kalath Hot Springs: A Warm Beas-side Stop near Manali

Kalath Hot Springs: A Warm Beas-side Stop near Manali

There is something quietly wonderful about slipping into naturally warm water while a cold Himalayan river rushes past just below. The Kullu valley has a few famous hot springs, but one of the easiest to reach — and one many travellers drive straight past — sits at the little roadside village of Kalath, on the highway between Naggar and Manali.

Warm water on the banks of the Beas

Kalath lies on the Kullu–Manali highway right beside the Beas, about 6 km short of Manali. The village is home to several natural hot water springs, long believed by locals to have curative properties. The water is rich in sulphur and other minerals, and a soak is said to ease tired joints and muscles, improve circulation and simply melt away the stiffness of a long mountain journey.

Free pools and private baths

There is a mix of options at Kalath. A couple of the springs are free, simple government-built baths open to all; other, more private bathing rooms charge a small fee. Shared baths cost very little, while a private spring room can be booked by the hour for a modest amount. It is unfussy and local rather than a polished spa — which is exactly its charm.

  • Where: Kalath village, on the national highway beside the Beas, ~6 km before Manali
  • From Naggar: roughly 18–20 km up the valley; an easy short drive or bus ride
  • Cost: free public baths; private baths from a small charge upward
  • Best time: most restorative in the cooler months and after snow, but lovely year-round
  • Bring: a towel, a change of clothes, flip-flops and a small bag for valuables; baths are basic, and men's and women's sections are separate

Making a trip of it

Because Kalath sits right on the highway, it slots neatly into a day heading up towards Manali, Vashisht or Solang — a warm, restful pause on the way there or back. It is also an easy, low-effort outing on its own if you simply want to soak and watch the river go by.

Kalath is close enough to Naggar to enjoy in an afternoon and be back for dinner. If you would like a peaceful village base between Kullu and Manali to build these little day trips around, Ghar in the Hills is a homely spot right in Naggar with valley views from the window.
