Jogini Waterfall Trek near Vashisht: A Half-Day from Naggar

Some of the loveliest walks in the Kullu valley ask very little of you, and the Jogini Waterfall trek is one of them. It climbs from the temple village of Vashisht, just across the river from Manali, through apple orchards and pine forest to a broad waterfall tumbling down a rock face — with a small shrine to Jogini Mata at its foot. It makes a perfect half-day outing from Naggar when you want mountain air and moving water without committing to a full trek.

Where it is and how to reach it

Vashisht sits about 22 km up the valley from Naggar, roughly an hour by road via Patlikuhl and Manali. From Naggar you can take a shared cab or bus to Manali, then a short auto or taxi across the river to Vashisht village. The trail begins near the top of the village, past the famous hot springs and the old stone temple. It's well used and easy to follow — where in doubt, walk towards the sound of the water.

The trail

The waterfall lies about 3 km from Vashisht, and most walkers take between one and a half and two hours to reach it, going gently uphill the whole way. The path threads through orchards and deodar, past a couple of small cafes where you can stop for chai or Maggi, before entering cooler forest near the end. The falls themselves drop around 150 feet, and there's a shallow pool at the base where people cool their feet in warm weather. The Jogini Mata temple beside the water is believed by many to be a Shakti Peetha, one of the sacred sites of the goddess, so dress modestly and step quietly near the shrine.

Best time to go

April to June and September to November are ideal, when the trail is dry and the falls run strong on snowmelt and springs. Avoid the peak monsoon weeks of July and August, when the path turns slippery and loose stones can come down. In deep winter the upper section may be icy. Start in the morning so you're back down the valley by mid-afternoon.

Practical tips

  • Wear proper shoes with grip — the last stretch is rocky.
  • Carry water, though the cafes en route sell drinks and snacks.
  • There's no entry fee for the trail or the falls.
  • Pair it with a soak at the Vashisht hot springs on your way back.

If you'd like an unhurried base to come home to after a day of walking, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village — close enough to Manali for easy day trips, quiet enough to feel a world away. Lace up, catch an early bus up the valley, and let the sound of the falls do the rest.
