Hanuman Tibba: Viewpoints and Treks Below Manali's Great Peak

On a clear morning from the Kullu Valley, one white pyramid dominates the skyline above Manali. That is Hanuman Tibba, at 5,982 m (about 19,626 ft) the highest peak in the Dhauladhar range's Kangra district stretch. You do not need to climb it to enjoy it; plenty of viewpoints and easy walks bring it into sharp focus.

About the peak

Hanuman Tibba lies north-west of Manali, east of Solang Valley, and its steep, pyramid-like form makes it easy to recognise. The Taintuka and Manali passes along the range mark the boundary between Kangra and Kullu districts. The mountain is a serious technical objective; its west and north faces are described as still unclimbed, so it is best admired from below unless you are an experienced mountaineer with a proper expedition.

Where to see it

  • Solang Valley: a short drive from Manali, with open meadows and clear views on a good morning.
  • Old Manali and Vashisht: peaks appear above the cedar canopy, especially at sunrise.
  • Lama Dugh and Beas Kund trails: day walks and treks that bring you much closer to the Dhauladhar ridge.
  • Naggar hillsides: on crisp days, snow peaks are visible across the valley from higher viewpoints above the village.

Walks that get you closer

The Beas Kund trek, starting near Solang, leads to the glacial source of the Beas River and gives a close look at the Hanuman Tibba and Shitidhar massif. Many travellers do it in one long day or an overnight camp. Lama Dugh meadow offers a gentler option. Either way, start early, because clouds usually build by late morning.

Best season

October and November often give the clearest skies after the monsoon, with crisp air and fresh snow on the peaks. April to June is also good. July and August bring frequent cloud and rain, and winter offers snow views but can restrict road access to higher spots.

Photography tips

  • Shoot at sunrise, when the summit catches pink light.
  • Use a telephoto lens to compress the layers of ridges.
  • Carry a warm layer; mornings are cold even in autumn.
