Bir Billing Paragliding: A Trip from Naggar, Himachal

If you've dreamed of soaring over the Himalayas, few places make it as accessible as Bir Billing — India's premier paragliding destination and one of the most respected in the world. It's a longer excursion from Naggar, but for adventurous travellers it's well worth the drive.

Where Is Bir Billing?

Bir Billing sits in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. "Billing" is the take-off point at around 2,400 m, while "Bir" is the landing zone in the valley below. From Naggar it's roughly 130 km via Mandi — a scenic four-to-five-hour drive — so most travellers make it an overnight trip rather than a rushed day out.

The Flight

Tandem flights are flown with a certified pilot, so no experience is needed. A standard flight lasts about 15–20 minutes and typically costs around ₹3,000–₹3,500, while longer flights of 25–30 minutes run closer to ₹4,500–₹5,000. GoPro footage of your flight usually costs an extra ₹500–₹1,000. Always confirm the price and the pilot's credentials before you fly.

Best Time to Go

The prime paragliding windows are roughly March to June and October to November, with the autumn months of October and November considered the most reliable for clear skies and steady conditions. Flying pauses during the monsoon (July to September) when the weather is unpredictable, so avoid those months.

Practical Tips

  • Wear closed shoes, a light jacket and sunglasses; mornings at Billing are cold.
  • Flights depend on weather — build in a buffer day in case conditions ground the gliders.
  • Choose an operator linked to a recognised paragliding association and check the equipment.
  • Prone to motion sickness? A light meal beforehand and a quick word with your pilot helps.

Making It a Trip from Naggar

Because of the distance, it's best to set off early, stay a night near Bir, fly the next morning when conditions are calmest, and drive back afterwards. Bir itself is a laid-back spot with a strong cafe culture and a Tibetan monastery or two worth a look.
