The Bhubu Pass (often spelt Bhubhu) is an old shepherd trail that links the Chuhar valley of Mandi district with the Lagh valley of Kullu. At roughly 2,900 metres, it is a modest pass by Himalayan standards, but the views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges make the effort very worthwhile.
Quick Facts
- Altitude: about 2,900 metres (9,500 feet) at the pass.
- Duration: 2 days, covering roughly 25–28 km in total.
- Difficulty: moderate, with steep gradients in the final stretch on both sides.
- Season: mid-May to late September; April and October can be good if snow has cleared.
The Route
The classic trek starts on the Mandi side, near the Tikken bridge in the Chuhar valley, where buses and taxis arrive from Joginder Nagar and Mandi. From there you climb through oak and deodar forest and past small villages such as Devgarh, with a night halt in the forest or meadow area below the pass. On day two you cross the top and descend to the Lagh valley on the Kullu side, finishing near the road. Many groups also do the trek in the opposite direction, so check how your operator plans it.
Because this is a pass crossing, you will need a driver to meet you at the other end, or a plan for a shared taxi back. From Naggar, the Kullu end is a manageable drive in the Beas valley, and the road to the other side runs through Mandi, so allow a full day for transfers.
What You Will See
Rhododendron blooms light up the slopes in spring, usually April to May. Higher up, open grass and rock offer wide panoramas, and on clear days you can spot the snowy peaks near Deo Tibba and Indrasan in the Kullu direction. Expect birds, langurs and occasionally shepherd flocks.
Preparation and Safety
- Hire a local guide if you are new to the area. Some sections are unmarked and snow patches can linger early in the season.
- Carry 2–3 litres of water. Sources are limited on the ridge.
- Start early each day and plan to be off the pass before afternoon clouds build.
- Pack a rain jacket, warm layers, trekking shoes with grip, sun protection and a head torch.
- Leave no trace, and carry all litter back down.
Who Should Do It
Anyone with decent fitness and some day-hike experience can manage it with a guide. If you are brand new to trekking, build up with a shorter hike in the Kullu valley first.
After a day on the trail, there is nothing like a hot meal and a warm room in the hills. Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar village — book your stay to wake up to valley views.
Start Planning
The Bhubu Pass is a quiet alternative to the busier treks. Choose a clear weather window, hire someone who knows the trail, and enjoy a crossing that feels far from the crowds.
