Slow Travel in Naggar: A Digital Detox in the Hills

Naggar is not a place you tick off in a hurry. The old capital of Kullu sits on a quiet hillside above the Beas, far enough from the highway noise of Manali that mornings arrive slowly and evenings stretch out. If you have been meaning to put your phone down and actually rest, this is one of the easiest places in Himachal to do it.

Why Naggar suits a slow trip

There is no marathon of sights here, and that is the point. A day can hold a single unhurried thing — a walk to a temple, an afternoon with a book on a sunny terrace, a long lunch — and still feel full. The village is compact and walkable, the pace is gentle, and the mountains do the rest.

How to switch off

  • Go greyscale or airplane mode. Set your phone to greyscale or leave it offline until evening. Signal in the hills is patchy anyway — lean into it.
  • Wake with the light. The best hour in Naggar is early, before the day warms, when the valley is still and the birds are loud.
  • Walk everywhere. The castle, the temples, the orchards and the forest trails are all within reach on foot.
  • Eat slowly. Local kitchens serve simple, seasonal food — siddu, rajma-chawal, and fresh apples in autumn.

Quiet things to do

Sit on the terrace of Naggar Castle and watch the light move across the ranges. Wander the wooden temples in the village. Take the gentle forest walk towards Nishala. Spend an hour with the paintings at the Roerich estate. Sketch, journal, or simply do nothing — the valley makes idleness feel earned.

A note for remote workers

If you are combining rest with a little work, keep mornings for focus and afternoons for the outdoors, and carry a local SIM as backup for connectivity. But the real luxury here is permission to log off entirely, even for a day.

Slow travel works best when your base encourages it. Ghar in the Hills is a homestay right in Naggar village, with valley views and the kind of unhurried mornings this trip is made for — book a few nights and let yourself properly slow down.
